Ellen Burstyn Returns to Terrifying ‘Exorcist’ Franchise After 50 Years

Beloved Oscar-winning actor Ellen Burstyn makes her long-awaited comeback to the iconic horror franchise, “The Exorcist,” in the upcoming installment, “The Exorcist: Believer.” The newly released trailer showcases her reprising her unforgettable role as Chris MacNeil, forever haunted by her daughter Regan’s possession in the original 1973 film.

The film’s plot centers around Leslie Odom Jr.’s character, Victor, a widower trying to save his possessed daughter (Lidya Jewett) and her friend (Olivia Marcum). Seeking help from Ann Dowd’s character, the trailer hints at the existence of others who have encountered similar horrors before.

Burstyn’s character emerges as the person with firsthand knowledge of these dark forces, setting them on a perilous journey to save the two possessed girls. Burstyn’s voiceover stresses that exorcism is a universal ritual, and their battle against evil will require drawing upon various methods from different cultures and religions.

The sequel follows Victor’s desperate quest to confront unimaginable evil, leading him to seek the aid of Chris MacNeil—the sole survivor who has witnessed such malevolence in the past.

Directed by David Gordon Green, “The Exorcist: Believer” is just the beginning, as it marks the first of three new “Exorcist” films that will continue the legacy of the terrifying 1973 classic.
