Florence Pugh’s Nude Scene Altered with CGI Dress in ‘Oppenheimer’ for Some Countries
Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’: Global Impact and Altered Scenes for Some Countries
Christopher Nolan’s film ‘Oppenheimer’ made a powerful impact worldwide, captivating audiences with its non-linear narrative, haunting soundtrack, and stellar performances. The movie offered an exhilarating yet chilling experience to viewers, but there’s an interesting twist in some countries.
Despite claims of being CGI-free, ‘Oppenheimer’ underwent alterations in specific regions. The film delves into the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the Father of the Atomic Bomb, and explores his personal relationships, including his romantic involvement with Jean Tatlock. However, audiences in India and the Middle East are puzzled by the revelation of an intimate scene between Oppenheimer and Tatlock, as it appears to have been modified using CGI in these regions.
Florence Pugh’s Nude Scene Censored in India and Other Countries
In Christopher Nolan’s gripping historical drama ‘Oppenheimer’, Florence Pugh portrays Jean Tatlock, a communist who was romantically involved with J. Robert Oppenheimer, the physicist leading the atomic bomb project. However, the intimate moment between the characters faced censorship in countries like India, Indonesia, and the Middle East.
The scene features Pugh’s character topless during a conversation with Oppenheimer in a hotel room. In the edited version shown in theaters in those regions, her body is covered with a CGI-generated black dress, obscuring the original nude scene.

In order to comply with the cultural norms and regulations of Indian and Middle Eastern cinema, the creators of ‘Oppenheimer’ had to use digital effects to dress Florence Pugh’s character during a nude scene. This practice is not uncommon when releasing films in specific territories. Interestingly, this is not the first instance where a computer-generated black dress has been employed to cover exposed skin in a movie.

Movies That Have Used CGI To Cover-Up Female Skin
Asghar Farhadi’s Oscar-winning film ‘The Salesman’ garnered recognition worldwide. However, when Charlize Theron appeared on Iranian state TV in a gold lamé dress, the broadcast used CGI black sleeves and a collar to cover her arms and neckline, conforming to their strict censorship rules on nudity.
Many countries in the Middle East and Asia enforce strict censorship on nudity, profanity, and sexual content. This led to the recent Disney movies ‘Eternals’ and ‘West Side Story’ being banned in Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia, due to the inclusion of a transgender character and an openly same-sex couple, respectively.
