Sherman Vannoy Bus Accident
Sherman Vannoy, a 17-year-old student from Lake Minneola High School, lost his life in a devastating bus accident. Early morning reports indicate that the tragedy occurred around 6:00 am, when Sherman was struck by a school bus on his way to school. Despite immediate medical attention at South Lake Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.
Erick Hernandez, who holds the Seat 4 on the Minneola City Council, expressed deep sorrow: “Today, we are united in grief as we mourn the premature loss of a promising young life from our community. Words fall short in conveying the immense sadness weighing on our hearts, as we offer our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. During this incomprehensibly difficult period, they remain in our thoughts and prayers.
“This tragic event is a solemn reminder of life’s fragility. It underscores the imperative to value each moment we have with those dear to us, and it calls us as a community to rally together in support during times of sorrow and loss.”
Mary Laurenzi, the 78-year-old bus driver from Leesburg, has been with the school district since November 21st. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, she was making a left turn into the high school from Hancock Road when the collision occurred. Trooper Migdalisis Garcia clarified that as Vannoy approached the crosswalk on his bicycle, Laurenzi swerved to avoid him but ended up striking him instead, eventually veering off the road and hitting a stop sign and a chain-link fence.
Vannoy was subsequently rushed to South Lake Hospital where he passed away. Laurenzi and the two other passengers on the bus, a 55-year-old woman from Leesburg and an 18-year-old woman from Minneola, were fortunately unscathed. Investigations into the tragic accident are still ongoing.
